How to Use an RDP File to Connect to a Terminal Server

Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) files allow you to connect to a terminal server. Follow these steps to use an RDP file:

Steps to Connect

  1. Locate the .rdp file on your computer. Double-click it to open the Remote Desktop Connection application (mstsc.exe).
  2. In the Remote Desktop Connection window, verify the server address and other connection details.
  3. Click the Connect button to initiate the connection.
  4. Enter your credentials (username and password) when prompted and click OK.
  5. Wait for the connection to establish. You will now have access to the terminal server.

(Optional) Using Two Monitors

If you have two monitors and want to use both, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Remote Desktop Connection application (mstsc.exe).
  2. Click Show Options at the bottom of the window.
  3. Go to the Display tab.
  4. Check the box labeled "Use all my monitors for the remote session".
  5. Click Connect to start your session with multiple monitors.
